# ExifZero

> ExifZero (https://exifzero.com) is a free, browser-based tool that shows what an image's metadata reveals — AI generator and prompt, C2PA Content Credentials, GPS location, camera serial numbers — and removes it losslessly. Files are read and rewritten on the user's device and are never uploaded.

Key facts:

- Privacy: there is no upload endpoint and no server-side processing. The page keeps working offline once loaded.
- Lossless: for JPEG, PNG, WebP and GIF, metadata blocks are cut out and the compressed image data is copied byte for byte, so pixels are identical. HEIC, AVIF and TIFF are re-encoded to JPEG and labelled as such.
- Reads: EXIF, XMP, IPTC, ICC color profiles, PNG text chunks (Stable Diffusion, ComfyUI, NovelAI, InvokeAI, Fooocus parameters), JPEG and GIF comments, and C2PA manifests (claim generator, actions, ingredients, signer certificate, thumbnail).
- Removes: all of the above except, by default, the ICC color profile and the orientation flag, which carry no personal data. After cleaning, the file is re-scanned to confirm nothing is left.
- AI detection is metadata-only: "No AI tags found" means the file carries no AI labels, not that the image is real. C2PA signatures are displayed, not cryptographically verified.
- It does not remove or alter invisible pixel watermarks such as Google SynthID, because it never changes pixels.
- Removing metadata does not change any duty to disclose AI-generated content under platform rules or laws such as the EU AI Act.
- Free, no sign-up, supported by advertising.
